Summer League Spotlight: Opening Day Thoughts

One of the most unique things about the NBA that sets it aside from other leagues to me, are the summer leagues. Each offseason summer, franchises assemble teams filled with rookies, young players, journeymen, and undrafted free agents. What’s cool about this season, is that NBATV will be airing every game live (For the schedule, click here).

Today, 4 games took place at Orlando’s practice facility, and I was able to watch the Thunder/Celtics matchup and the Nets/Sixers matchup. Without getting into a full out wrap up, the Thunder showed some moxy by coming down from 20+ points to win this game. Their summer league roster might be a little too good as it features the likes of James Harden, Serge Ibaka, and Eric Maynor. The bright spot for the Celtics was the unorthodox beast, Luke Harangody.

The Nets/Sixers matchup featured 2nd and 3rd overall picks Derrick Favors and Evan Turner. They both played solidly as you could tell they were shaking the cobwebs off. The two combined for 15 total fouls! In the summer league games, one of the main rule differences is that you can’t foul out. for every foul after six, the opposing team gets 2 free throws. For any foul after ten, the opposing team gets 2 shots and the ball.

(The Sixers got the W. Take that Shooter and Basher!)
