NBAtoday.net 2010 Mock Draft
The following mock draft is a collaboration from the writers of NBAtoday.net. By no means are we real scouts, although some of us think we are (The Basher) and some of us wish we were (the entire staff). Our mock draft is based on what we think teams and at times I will look at another mock draft and throw a guy in there who I know nothing about just because I can.
2010 NBA Mock Draft:
1. Wizards – John Wall, 6-4, 196 lb, PG, Kentucky – They’d be stupid not to pick Wall. He was, in some peoples’ eyes, the most exciting player to watch in college basketball this past year. Wall brings everything the Wizards need to the table: a great player, an actual point guard and maybe the most important thing A NEW IMAGE! People can now ignore the fact that Arenas WILL get hurt and the fact that he is an idiot.
2. Sixers – Evan Turner, 6-7, 215 lb, SG, Ohio State – Granted the Sixers put themselves in a position to draft a big guy but I see it as a spot to pick the best player in the draft, that’s right I said it. In college Turner had at least 3 triple-doubles his senior year and played every position including center. He is by far the most versitle player in the draft and I think he will be a great player within 2-3 years and will start immediately on the Sixers putting AI at a more natural 3-guard position.
3. Nets – Wesley Johnson, 6-7, 205 lb, SF, Syracuse – Some say the Nets will draft Favors at #3 but I see things differently. The Nets are missing that 3-guard who can run the floor and bring the crowd to it’s feet. That role used to be filled by Richard Jefferson and I still believe the Nets can play that style of basketball but they need that type of player first and Johnson is that guy. Who will they ACTUALLY take? Some lame foreign player who will suck OR the favorable pick in Derrick Favors.
4. Timberwolves – Derrick Favors, 6-10, 245 lb, PF, Georgia Tech – By default the T-Wolves have to take Favors is the Nets pass on him. The Wolves are screwed if the Nets don’t pick Favors because the next 5 guys getting drafted were all PF/C in college and combine that with Jefferson and Love… well there just may not be enough minutes to develop the new rookie.
5. Kings – Greg Monroe, 6-11, 245 lb, C, Georgetown – Can Monroe live up to the Georgetown center hype? I think so. I think he lacks toughness at times but he will be force to get tough when playing out West. The Kings will use Monroe as a backup to Dalembert and he can develop Monroe into more of a shot-blocker and rebounder while providing solid minutes off the bench.
6. Warriors – DeMarcus Cousins, 6-11, 292 lb, C, Kentucky – The Warriors have a good opportunity to build around a big man in this position. Yes they have Randolph but he is more of a PF due to his lack of weight/toughness and Biedrins seems to get hurt a lot lately. With a team full of all combo guards they almost can’t screw this pick up (unless they draft Aminu).
7. Pistons – Al-Faroug Aminu, 6-8, 216 lb, SF, Wake Forest – Aminu is one of the riskiest picks in the draft if you ask me. At 6-8 he is a small forward who isn’t a great shooter (under 25% career 3-pointers in college) and may not be quick enough to guard SF in the NBA and is undersize to guard PF. I may be 100% wrong with my analysis but only time will tell.
8. Clippers – Cole Aldrich, 6-10, 236 lb, C, Kansas – Most people are saying Luke Babbitt will be drafted by the Clippers but after they dealt Camby last year and no one knows how Griffin will rebound after missing the entire year the Clippers would make a good decision in drafting a center who is a great shot blocker and an above average rebounder.
9. Jazz – Ed Davis, 6-10, 227 lb, PF, North Carolina – Davis is the first guy in our top 9 who I really said “he has potential.” I feel like you know what you are getting with the other 8 guys but with Davis, I’m not quite sure. He is a raw, athletic big man but was non-existant in big games for the Tar Heels last year. Putting him on a Jazz team without Boozer may take him a lot longer to develop then some may think.
10. Pacers – Luke Babbitt – 6-9, 218 lb, PF, Nevada – He reminds me of former Neveda player Nick Fazekas… who is now playing in France somewhere. I’m just not feeling guys from Nevada, sorry.
11. Hornets – Paul George – 6-9, 214 lb, SF, Fresno St. – Don’t know too much about this guy but that he is a versitile wing player and a play maker. His heigh and athletic ability make him a tough matchup at the SF position but he still needs to develop in all areas of his game.
12. Grizzles – Avery Bradley – 6-3, 180 lb, SG, Texas – Listed as a SG but may be a PG in the NBA. He probably left college a little too early and didn’t develop as much as he should have. If Avery catches on quickly well good bye Conley Jr., if not then I don’t see Bradley making much of an impact in the NBA, at all.
13. Raptors – Patrick Patterson – 6-9, 240 lb, PF, Kentucky – Patterson is vastly undersized but a great competitor who has a lot of college experience. The Raptors need some sort of a big man solution with Chris Bosh walking out the door. Patterson isn’t a cornerstone piece for a franchise but he is a good compliment if somehow they could resign Bosh (but they won’t).
14. Rockets – Gordon Hayward – 6-8, 211 lb, SF, Butler – We all saw what Hayward could do in the NCAA tourney but did the scouts get caught up in the Butler Bulldogs’ hype? Some positives with Hayward are he isn’t afraid to take the ball to the hole or take the last shot. He’s one of those guys who is always around the ball, I hate guys like that they always kill the Nets.
15. Bucks – Daniel Orton- 6-10, 269 lb, C, Kentucky – This is a HUGE stretch but the Bucks just acquired two SG/SF players in Maggette and CDR just days for the draft and they could use a backup to Andrew Bogut. Orton is a huge project having barely played in college as the backup to Cousins.
16. Wolves – Xavier Henry – 6-6, 210 lb SG, Kansas – An obvious one-and-done Henry needs to improve his shooting to be a
great NBA player. He has explosive athleticism and is big for a SG with a nice lefty touch who is extremely strong for such a young kid.
17. Bulls – Ekpe Udoh – 6-10, 237 lb, PF, Baylor – The Bulls will definitely pick Udoh if he slips to them (some mock drafts have him going top 12). Udoh is a defensive wizard like a Mutumbo type player who can develop nicely into a strong low post defensive presense in the NBA.
18. Heat – Devin Ebanks – 6-8, 208 lb, SF, West Virginia – Just looking at this kid you wouldn’t think he is good but for his size he is an excellent rebounder and plays more like a PF. When he gets a head of steam there isn’t many guys who can stop him from driving the lane.
19. Celtics – James Anderson – 6-6, 208 lb, SG, Oklahoma State – Anderson reminds me of Tony Allen Jr. with a better shot and ability to score the basketball. They went to the same school at different times and may end up on the same team, ouch.
20. Spurs – Hassan Whiteside – 7-0, 227 lb, C, Marshall – A true 7-footer and a true project. Great shot blocker but needs to improve his post moves and quicken up those feet to make it in the NBA. If the Spurs draft him they won’t have to worry about playing the 6-6 Blair at center ever again.
21. Thunder – Larry Sanders – 6-10, 222 lb, C, VCU – Championships are won with a legit low post player. Look at the last decade worth of NBA Champions, each team had a great center. Now I’m not saying Sanders will be great, but if he develops into greatness he will help the Thunder make it out of the first round next year.
22. Blazers – Kevin Seraphin – 6-9, 263 lb, PF, France – The Blazers will take him by default because they love foreign players and the mystery of when they will come to the NBA! He is listed as a center but at 6-9 is clearly undersized.
23. Wolves – Elliot Williams – 6-4, 180 lb, SG, Memphis – Another feller who shouldn’t have left college. I expect him to fall deeper into the first round because the SG position is so deep this year. He likes taking the 3-point shot and shoots it at 36% but very inconsistent with it.
24. Hawks – Lance Stephenson – 6-6, 227 lb, SG, Cincy – Goodbye Joe Johnson, Hello Born Ready Stephenson. Stephenson didn’t impress me in his first and only year in college but in New York he was the next best thing after God. He could be a sleeper pick by not living up to the hype in college and somehow, someway turning that around in the NBA.
25. Grizzlies – Craig Brackins – 6-10, 229 lb, PF, Iowa State – Brackins seems like another “Warrick Project” for Memphis, as in Hakim Warrick who put up good college numbers and can barley find a job in the NBA. Brackins, for a 6-10 guy shot just 42% from the field last season, that clearly needs to improve.
26. Thunder – Armon Johnson – 6-3, 190 lb, PG, Nevada – Johnson could prove to be a great backup for Westbrook to give him a breather. Maynor was decent, but Johnson can distribute and score the ball. He’ll need to cut down on the turnovers in the process though.
27. Nets – Damion James – 6-7, 227 lb, SF, Texas – Explosive rebounder, quick defender and a well polished IQ after spending 4 seasons at Texas. James experience gets me pumped up to draft a guy like this, he somewhat reminds me of a lesser Kenyon
Martin coming out of college but could definitely have a career better than Martin.
28. Grizzlies – Eric Bledsoe – 6-1, 192 lb, SG, Kentucky – If he wants to be a shooting guard he needs to figure out how to shoot the ball a heck of a lot better. I think Bledsoe is overhyped and won’t be good for at least 5 years, that is if he even turns out to be a decent player in the first place.
29. Magic – Domonique James – 6-4, 216 lb, SG, South Florida – The Magic will draft the home town boy who was fantasic this season in the Big East. James brings a lot of toughness onto the court but in the NBA I will be curious to see if he becomes a PG or SG and if so where will he fit into this Magic lineup?
30. Wizards – Jordan Crawford – 6-4, 198 lb, SG, Xavier – He dunked on LeBron, enough said. The boy has hops.
-The Basher

#1. If the Sixers draft a big man, do the Nets take Turner or Johnson? I personally like Turner’s overall game and versatility a little bit more than Johnson’s. If this were the case, I’d take Turner, and then make a push for Rudy Gay at the 3, then David Lee or Boozer at the 4.
#2. Do you think that the Nets believe that drafting Johnson will make them a lock to land Boozer since they have the same agent? If I were the Nets and I believed I could get 2 starters from this draft (Johnson and Boozer), then I would definitely draft Johnson over Favors.
#3. I just don’t see Greg Monroe as a center in the NBA. Don’t get me wrong, I think he is an excellent player and I would want him on my team, but his offensive game is more finesse than power and athleticism. He will be one of the best passing big men in the game from day 1 and he has a good outside shot. I see him as a very good PF that an offense can run through. It will be hard to be as good as either of them, but I see him as a player like Bosh (both lefteis) or Dirk.
Mike I really feel like the Nets will be drafting Johnson to get to Boozer, which is a crap shoot and just pure insanity. Do I hope it works? Obviously, haha. I much rather have turner as well but will the Sixers really pass up on him? Turner is #1 on my draft board, possibly a tie with Wall; it all just depending on who had the #1 pick.
Monroe is probably more a PF but I agree and think he could definitely make an impact as soon as anyone else in this draft.
Prepare to see an unhappy G if the Sixers don’t draft Turner.
G- I will be unhappy if the Sixers don’t draft Turner
[...] boy Basher has already compiled his pre-conceived notions of how the draft will come out. I don’t necessarily agree with everything he put down, but he does back it up [...]
