Sixers Pick Doug Collins
As you may have heard through various rumblings, the Philadelphia 76ers are going to bring in “the John Madden of NBA Broadcasting”, hiring the 58 year old Doug Collins as head coach. For starters, I never thought John Madden was that great of a broadcaster, but today I heard this nickname for Collins in light of his great broadcasting abilities. One thing I can respect Madden for (besides…Madden) is the fact that he did win a ring.
In comes Doug Collins, who started his career as the first overall pick by Philadelphia back in the olden days. Injury plagued throughout, he really made his niche as a coach and broadcaster. Supposedly the deal is for four years, as Collins will look to recharge a team that hit rock bottom last season. In hand, he gets the 2nd overall pick, along with a young roster full of athletic guys.
Now that I’m done with the unbiased riff raff, let’s get into whether or not I like this move.
I LOVE this move.
- Collins drafted and bred Michael Jordan. Here, he’s handed the second overall pick. My guess is that he feels comfortable in the draft room. Collins was replaced by Phil Jackson the year before they won a ring. Is Jackson better? Obviously, but Collins laid solid framework for this team to build from.
- He’s a guy who knows the Philly media, since he played here for 8 years. That being said, I also feel like the players will respect Collins, because he actually knows what he is talking about.
- Common sense tells me Collins is going to use the Sixers roster the way it should be used. UP-tempo all day!
This all being said, I’m going to ignore the fact that he was in the same draft room that drafted Kwame Brown, and hope for the best. So far the Sixers are 2 for 2 this offseason in my eyes. PLEASE DON’T SCREW THIS UP!!!

This is by far the best fit for Philadelphia. I will slightly cheer for the Sixers now because I enjoy his commentary thoroughly.
