News and Rumors: Tyreke Wins ROY (not MVP), Da-wight is Da-umb, and More June Jubilation!
I love me some awards and I love me some LeBron bashing. Check out this edition of News and Rumors in what I like to call the “News and Rumors: Playoff Edition”.
Rookie of the Year Does Not Equal MVP
Let me make this clear: I do not know who should have won Rookie of the Year this season. What I do know now is that the voters do not choose Rookie of the Year based on his value to his team (aka Most Valuable Player).
Sacramento Kings PG stud Tyreke Evans won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year after becoming only the fourth rookie to average at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. He led all rookies in scoring with 20.1 ppg, was second in assists at 5.8/game, and was fifth in rebounding at 5.3/game. Those are some serious stats, especially for a rookie.
Evans beat out Warriors G Stephen Curry and Bucks G Brandon Jennings. Both of those guys had some great seasons for their teams, but the one that stands out to me was Brandon Jennings. He led his Bucks to the playoffs as a rookie point guard, despite not having the flashiest stats. This is where my claim that ROY does not equal MVP. Do I agree? I can’t decide, but if I had to vote today as opposed to the end of the regular season, my vote would easily go to Jennings.
Nevertheless, congratulations to Evans. I hope that he has a chance to prove himself in the playoffs like Jennings is now, but it could take some time in Sac-Town.
Logic – Not Dwight Howard’s Strong Point
When I was a student at Rutgers University, I took a Logic class. Dwight Howard never attended any class at any university (especially not a logic class).
Da-wight was fined $35,000 by the NBA on Wednesday for criticizing the officials on his blog. Well this is my chance to criticize Howard on my blog. Howard claims that he is the only superstar that gets called for fouls in an above average nature. In the voice of Stan Van Gundy, “WHATTT!! DA-WIGHT!!!!”
This is the complete opposite of everything that the NBA has been criticized for, which is essentially: star players get calls in their favor. So what irks Howard to say this? I mean he’s a big guy, and not many stars are big guys. But if anyone watched that Magic/Bobcats joke of a series, they saw a joke of big man in Dwight Howard. He was letting Tyson Chandler get under his skin (Tyson Chandler? Really?). He was making HRBL plays on offense. I mean he’s not an offensive player and yet he was getting offensive fouls. He was awful. It’s his fault and not the refs. Period.
Tidbits:
- The Cavs announced that LeBron James has an elbow strain and a bone bruise. I’m sure if you asked LeBron, he’d announce, “I have a broken arm. I’m better than Jordan during the flu game.”
- Nene didn’t tear his ACL in his already HRBL knee, but he is already ruled out for Friday’s Game 6 in Utah. As JB mentioned after Game 5, this is not good for Denver’s chances of advancing.
- Lakers VP Jeanie Buss, Phil Jackson’s girlfriend, says the Zen Master will coach next year, but maybe not in LA. Seriously, why would he leave???
- Mark Cuban says no matter what happens in the 2 vs. 7 matchup between his Mavs and the Spurs, Rick Carlisle’s job security will not change. But he also never said Carlisle will definitely be back next year, haha.
- Kobe Bryant is number one in NBA jersey sales for the second straight year. Yes, just another time Kobe is better than LeBron (that was too easy).
