Roy Drops 41 (Warriors Score 9), Magic Roll Past Bulls

I know many of you were much more concerned with your respective college conference tournament (for me, its the Big East), but believe it or not, there was basketball Thursday night. Unlike the Big East bracket, no surprises here. I’ll point out some major takeaways from the TNT Thursday games.

Blazers 110, Warriors 105

- When a team scores 9 points in a quarter, something is W-R-O-N-G. Sadly, it wasn’t Golden State’s worst scoring quarter of the year, let alone their franchise (they only scored 2 points in a quarter against Toronto earlier this season). Yet, Golden State still had a 13 point lead going into the final quarter. GS had a massive 5 minute scoring drought in which Portland made its move.

- I expected Stephen Curry to continue to make his case for Rookie of the Year. Yet, Brandon Roy was a star on Thursday night at the Oracle Arena. He scored 41 points and collected 8 rebounds in the win. Marcus Camby picked up 17 rebounds, and Portland out-rebounded the Warriors 53-36.

- This was a big game for Portland, who haven’t won in Oakland since 2004. Yes, the Blazers haven’t won a game on the road against the Warriors in six years. That is a crazy (yet TRBL) statistic. Nate McMillian can rest easy, for now.

Magic 111, Bulls 82

- People were looking at this game as a true test for the Chicago Bulls. Well, I hope you got your answer. After getting outscored 28-17 in the first quarter, they follow up by getting blown out in the second quarter 37-16. However, the Bulls were without three of their stars (Joakim Noah, Loul Deng, and Derrick Rose after the first quarter).

- You knew the Magic were in for a good night when Dwight Howard sunk a shot sitting down from the Magic bench during warmups. He could have stayed there, too, and the Magic still would have walked away victorious. Vince Carter, who 60 games into the season has finally found his shooting stroke, went 8-13 from the field and finished with 23. Dwight had a quiet 12 points and 6 rebounds, but only played 19 minutes in the blowout.

- The Bulls leading scorer? James Johnson. He led Chicago with 13 points, followed by Taj Gibson and Hakim Warrick with 12. Yikes…

This is the Commish, and I love TNT Thursdays (even when WVU is playing Cincinnati on ESPN).
