Nets CEO is Not Amused by Fan Wearing Paper Bag
Shooter: The Nets are so bad.
Readers (all together): How bad are they?
Shooter: The Nets are so bad that even their CEO can’t hold back his frustration.
As the end of the season approaches for a team that is now 7-63 and in grave danger of breaking the all time futility mark in NBA history, Nets CEO Brett Yormark took his frustration out on two paying ‘fans’ who wore paper bags with holes for eyes during Monday’s 99-89 loss to the Miami Heat.
Between the third and fourth quarter, with the Nets down by 12, the ‘fan’ sitting in the second row was spotted by Yormark wearing the bag in a statement of how embarrassing the Nets are. According to the NY Daily News, in an article our reader Mike sent to me, Yormark asked the fan why he was wearing the bag, and he sarcastically responded with, “Because the Nets are so good.” This caused Yormark to freak out and start yelling at the ‘fan’. Turns out the two guys had no idea that they were arguing with the CEO of the NJ Nets.
I was actually at this game, as I have for most of the Nets home losses this season, but my seats up in the boons of the IZOD did not allow me to recognize this confrontation. The game was so frustrating that witnessing a moment like this could have actually redeemed my trek up the NJ Turnpike. I may have been able to recognize the CEO is I had a notion that it was going on, but they were probably throwing t-shirts in the crowd around then which caused a frenzy with all of the front-runner Heat fans in the upper deck around me.
The paper bag ‘fan’ and his buddy are not season ticket holders, which is no shock to me. I’ll admit, the first time you see something like this it can be funny. But then it’s: ha ha, let’s move on. Also, I did see four others in the upper deck sitting directly across from me wearing bags over their heads too. The thing that surprised me was that the arena’s spotlight guy kept highlighting them during an extended time out earlier in the game. Let me tell you something, if you’re a fan of a team and you see this in person, it’s not as funny as simply seeing it on TV for a second.
Believe it or not, I do support the CEO barking at the fans. I also feel that the paying ‘fans’ can do whatever they want as long as it’s not disruptive to the game. If they want to put a paper bag over their head because the team is so bad, then so be it. He paid to sit there and watch the HRBL team, so unless he goes running on the court, just let it be.
In this case though, I want to see the CEO be frustrated with the team. They weren’t supposed to be good this year, but they certainly weren’t supposed to be this bad. Therefore, I want the passion for the game to be evident in all aspects of the team. Even the guys wearing the suits.
As I mentioned, this team is now 7-63 without a whole lot of hope in the coming weeks. Will the nets end up with the worst record? Most likely. But ask me Friday night after the Nets complete home games against Sacramento and Detroit. I know I’ll be there, and I’m sure there will be some more paper bags popping up around the arena.

i don’t think he should’ve yelled at the fans… they paid for the tickets! that’s one way to make the arena even emptier. as you said… they can do anything that they want short of disrupting the game. we saw those guys with the paper bags on their heads on the way out… i thought it was funny! and i am a nets fan as you know
i am sure the CEO can use his frustration and channel it into something much more productive, like say, oh i don’t know… improving the team? just a thought!
As if there weren’t enough alarms going off in the Nets camp (I recall a scene from the movie Apollo 13 to be a good comparison), this takes the cake.
Then again, the fans probably didn’t pay for the tickets…at this stage of the game they are having trouble giving them away.
