Globetrotters on Ice? Yes!

Lace up your….ice cleats?

The Harlem Globetrotters took a little field trip to Manhattan on Tuesday to play a game of basketball, on a hockey rink in Central Park. The most famous traveling team in the world played on ice for the first time in their 84-year history to play their greatest rivals, the Washington Generals.

I thought the Generals were due for a win in this one, but the Globetrotters extended their win streak over the Generals to 13,140 games with a 32-15 win.

Players for both teams wore ice cleats over their shoes, kept those warm-ups on, and some even wrapped their headband around their hockey helmet. And if you’re wondering what the rules were, well, you’ve never seen a Globetrotters basketball game.

The highlight of the game came when Kris ‘Hi-Lite’ Bruton of the Globetrotters came out of a timeout wearing a goalie mask and holding a hockey stick. Hmm.. I wonder what he planned on doing with that?

Hi-Lite swatted down shots like Dikembe Mutombo, but of course he used his hockey stick. The referee blew his whistle and proclaimed, “Hey! This is basketball!” Hi-Lite responded with “I know, but I can’t play defense without it.” The ref shrugged it off and allowed it. And comedy ensued.

So the Globetrotters and the Generals have now played on hardwood and ice. What’s next?

Sand?

Water?

Mars?

Something tells me it doesn’t matter, the Generals will still lose. What’s worse? Being a Generals fan or being a Clippers fan?

This is great! I was alerted to this event because I have my Google Alerts set to the term “ice cleat” since I work for a Maine company, 32north, that makes ice cleats. I really, really wanted to send the players some of our Stabilicers Sports cleats (designed for athletic use) but the it was brought to my attention from someone at the Portland Red Claws (NBA development league) that our largest size (L -12.5) would NOT fit the shoes of the players – too small… bummer! All the same – it was a great story and I posted the link about the game on our fanpage for others to see. Just goes to show you – great skill and athletic ability can be transferred to any medium! Now that they have defeated ice what is next anyway! Great job!

Thanks for the nice comment and the article linkage, Heather!

That would have been great if you could’ve supplied ice cleats to the Globetrotters! But, you’re right, I don’t think L-12.5 would fit them, haha.

I’ll see what I can do to try and get some more ice cleat articles up for you to enjoy..!
