Clippers Fire Coach Dunleavy, But There’s a Catch

Attention Clippers fan (yes, I’m saying there’s only one), you are one step closer to being a good franchise! …but you’re still about 1,927,204 steps away from reaching that goal.

The Los Angeles Clippers have dismissed head coach Mike Dunleavy from his main role of head coach, but not so fast…Dunleavy will remain a member of the front office. Last season, Elgin Baylor left as general manager and Dunleavy was given the combo job of coach and GM.

Yeah, we saw how that worked out.

After missing out on keeping Elton Brand to play with new point guard Baron Davis, the Clippers went 19-63. They got the first overall pick in the draft and chose Blake Griffin out of Oklahoma. Then, right before the season started he got hurt, and last month it was announced he would be out for the season.

Doesn’t sound like fun to me. I guess it’s a good thing LA is distracted by their other team…

Dunleavy has been on the hot seat for years now ever since that amazing 2005-06 season when the Clips won 47 games and won their first playoffs series since 1975. In 6+ seasons, Dunleavy has led the Clippers to a 215-326 record. Honestly, there was really no light at the end of the tunnel for Dunleavy or the Clippers. The final straw must have been losses in the last week to both the Nets and the Timberwolves.

The Clippers have named assistant coach Kim Hughes as the interim coach. He has worked as an assistant for both the Clippers and Nuggets in the last 12 years.

I’m pretty surprised the Clips didn’t go with John Lucas, since he has head coaching experience, but what are you gonna do – it’s the Clippers.

Haha the intro/header had me cracking up. It’s probably only a matter of time until Dunleavy is fired as GM too.
