Tim Donaghy: A Reliable Source

Photo Courtesy of nypost.comAfter a month of his release, Tim Donaghy strikes again. He has come out on 60 Minutes and tries to “set the story straight” and back up his book “Personal Foul.” In his entries, the ex referee claims he won 15 out of 16 bets he waged on and developed a winning pattern that “made bookies nervous.” Donaghy continued on by saying that if certain officials refereed games, including Steve Javie, Dick BaVetta, and my personal favorite, Joey Crawford, a consistent outcome would occur, leading to successful winnings. The man reports he won $100,000+ over his betting stint as trying to prove his gambling points hold water.

Let’s look into that, shall we. A thorough investigation performed by ESPN’s True Hoop Blogger Henry Abbott discovered ‘shockingly’ discrepancies in Donaghy’s formulas. First to start is the Dick BaVetta tirade, which strikes me in a highly sensitive way in particularly. Donaghy reported that any game Bavetta officiated; the veteran ref would keep games close, on purpose, so he urged gamblers to bet the spread. There are 44 accounts in this case, and if anybody followed the ex-convict’s advice would go 17-25. Nice job, Tim, you just won a jail cell worth of money there. Way to keep the bookies ‘nervous.’ He was wrong and I guess he didn’t follow his own advice if he achieved such an impressive streak.

To even go against BaVetta is a crime in itself. I had the pleasure of meeting this man, and he is not only a great person, but the best referee in the league. He is a stand out gentleman and a devoted official. How dare you?

The second is Steve Javie and the Allen Iverson theory. It has been reported Javie holds a distrainment against the newly acquired Sixer throughout his career and has officiated against him by not sendng him to the line compared to other officials. Therefore, Donaghy advised betters to wage money against the Sixers or Nuggets during games Javie was working. Again, the numbers don’t lie, and prove that Tim is a very smart boy. In the 14 games this allegation is studied, only 6 games would have been deemed profitable. One was a push, and if Donaghy bet on these games, he would lose money. The allegation of free throws also express an ironic outcome: Iverson averaged 4 more free throws a game than in his career average in those games.

Hey, let’s clap it up for the Mr. Ex-NBA referee, who was allegedly reported to have killed his neighbor’s dog… with a LAWNMOWER!

(Applause Please)

The last well thought out and successful point by Tim Donaghy is my personal favorite: Joe Crawford’s ability to help Allen Iverson played games (Ironic with all the Iverson talk). Crawford is reported to be a huge Iverson fan, more specifically his young nephew, and would purposely help AI and the Sixers in 14 games with favorable calls and loose non-calls. Due to this, the Sixers would be able to cover the spread, according to Donaghy’s incite. When first reading this portion of Donaghy’s book, I said to myself, “He may have something here…” because I hate, and I HATE Joe Crawford. It honestly wouldn’t surprise me the least if he was in such a scandal, especially on something so arbitrary, so ridiculously stupid.

However, the numbers support Crawford. In those 14 games he officiated, the Sixers beat the spread 5 times. 5 times. Now, Donaghy lost money again. Did he actually win money? How the hell did he win 15 out of 16 bets? The numbers don’t lie here. Anyone can do the research. The man is full of (explicit).

Donaghy has proved once again, he is the only culprit. There wasn’t any encouragement or orders from David Stern or anybody else in the organization. Of course, referees have biases, but it is unprofessional to act on them. A problem that Mr. NBA Mob himself has a tough time to follow. Even I have biases toward players when I referee. Its part of human nature, but it has never entered my mind to act on them. It ruins the game. Tim is by himself, and deservedly so. He earned to be exiled. There is no turning back for him. His attempt to bring down ex-colleagues and the league itself is a sick joke. He is a clown. He served his time and deserves more for this outrage. I don’t care if he was trying to fight the mob. That’s what Batman is for. Not Tim Donaghy.

Tim Donaghy should just stop talking… I almost rather watch MTV’s Jersey Shore than listen to him talk about the betting strategies he used to win money in the NBA… that’s depressing.

This is The Ref signaling I’m out until next time and remember: We miss calls, you miss layups.

Awesome job. Nice job backing up your ref buddies! Good summary there, I feel like I don’t need to read his book and he really is a jack***. I mean what and idiot. His “strategies” weren’t strategies they were flat out guesses and he is clearly lying through his teeth. This man deserves nothing in life and I’m glad he went to jail and I hope he goes back (for no apparent reason).

Donaghy is most definitely a liar and a cheat. No one can argue with that. He has made a lot of bold claims in his books and recent interviews, but there is no way they are all false. I don’t know to what extent they are true (and there will probably be no way to ever tell), but to brand everything he has said as a complete falsehood, then you are a fool. Biases for/against players are obvious, and there are definitely nights when games are too onesided. Like I said, IF there was ever any other cases of point shaving or simply favoritism, then Daniel Stern would make sure no one would know, but to rule out any possibilty of it completely would be foolish.

I absolutely agree. That’s why I didn’t go into all of his accusations, but it’s difficult to give him any credibility after all of the lies.

Isn’t Daniel Stern an actor? I believe you mean David Stern (he happens to be the NBA commissioner).

    I stick by my statement….
Actually I just got burned pretty bad. Good catch Shooter. I think all NBA fans are just hoping Tim Donaghy does not = Jose Canseco.

I must have had Celtic Pride on my mind when I wrote my first post.

If Tim Donaghy is the next Jose Canseco, I will never watch the NBA again.

Celtic Pride=Worst Best Basketball Movie of all time.
