T-Mac Is Back
Not quite yet, but Tracy McGrady self-proclaimed himself eligable to return from knee surgery on November 18th against the Timberwolves in Minnesota next week. Any time you get a player of Tracy McGrady’s calibur back it’s usually a great team but the question is will this affect Houston Role Players, I mean Houston Rockets, in a negative way?
The Rockets are streaking right now and in a good way. They started the season 4-2 and guys like Aaron Brooks, Trevor Ariza and Luis Scola are play great right now. I don’t think all the Rockets starters and bench players can keep this same level of intensity so no matter what analysists say I think this is good for the Rockets that T-Mac is back. Do I think he should start? No, I think you keep Ariza in and T-Mac will have to accept his role as the 6th man and be the veteran and hand over the reigns. Only time will tell.

I think T-Mac’s return is a win-win-win situation for Houston. Here’s why:
1. If he returns and is somehow the top player he once was, the Rockets will be even more dangerous because now they have a consistent threat with a group of redonkulous role players.
2. If he returns and sucks. Who cares? His 21.1 million will be coming off the books. Seeing how this offseason is going to be stacked with superstars, and you have Mr. Ming coming back for next year, this is a team someone would love to play for.
3. Mentioning he has a 21.1 million dollar contract expiring at the end of the year, he’s in the NBA standard position to be traded a la Shawn Marion last season. Big expiring contracts in the NBA get traded more than Pokemon cards did in 2001.
To add to G’s points:
1. T-Mac is realizing that he can’t do the same things he once was able to. Therefore, he is not going to pull an Allen Iverson and whine when he isn’t a started. He is going to accept his role and provide leadership. He can help a lot of players on that team: Chase Budinger and Trevor Ariza, for starters.
2. With the contract,I disagree with G due to the fact that no one is going to trade for him. He is injury prone, out-dated, and will not fit into a good role anywhere else. I think they will let him go after the season and use the extra cap room to bring a true scorer because their lack of a go-to-guy is going to catch up with them.
I disagree Ref. Teams would LOVE to trade for him because that’s $21.1 million off of their books.
There are endless possibilities of what you can do with T-Mac. No way is he going to get more than $10 million next year in any contract (unless it’s a crappy team because they love bad contracts). So a team can make a trade for him in hopes that he will resign for a low price. If not then they are letting go of tons of cap room.
Say the Bucks and Rockets make a trade with Redd and T-Mac. That would work, Redd may not opt out after this year (he has the early termination option) because he knows he won’t get as much money because he has been injured for so long. He can stay locked in his contract and continue to make $18 million in 2010 but then he is a free agent the next year.
The Rockets can suck it up for one year and add a high caliber player like Redd if he is healthy and then he is a free agent in 2011 and you can let him walk. It’s a perfect plan and unless Tracy McGrady agrees to a contract extension this season (for a cheap rate) I can definitely see him being traded. I’ll give it a 50/50 shot actually.
Yeah with trading McGrady, it would come down to what Houston could get in return. I’m not saying they’d trade him just to trade him. They’d love to have that money come of their payroll, but if they could get a star player in return, why not?
I agree Basher, my view point is based that no team wants to have Tracy McGrady. That’s all
