Rondo Agrees In Principle To Extension

Photo Courtesy of Sportfortruefans.comCeltics fans can breath easy now, Rajon Rondo agreed in principle to sign a 5-year contract extension which will start in the ’10-’11 season.  The deal is reportedly worth a minimum of $55 million which is a lot of money for a PG who averages 9.6 ppg.  I guess all that doesn’t really matter though when you average 1.7 spg and last year totalled 8.2 apg (this year already at 11.8 apg).  Personally, I think he is a guy who should make $6-10 million a year and have that contract be worth $40 million but I guess that’s why I’m not a GM.  Rondo is still just 23-years old though and has a long career ahead of him.

The only thing that would worry me as a Celtics fan is how good is Rondo without Garrnett, Pierce and Allen.  I honestly believe the Rondo is a above average-pass first point guard without the Big 3 but he isn’t a great outside shooter.  Also in 5 years the Big 3 will definitely be on the decline due to the age of Garnett, Pierce and Allen but locking up Rondo is definitely a good move, and today I would be happy if I was a Celtics fan.

Edit to original post:  If the Celtics didn’t agree to sign Rondo yesterday he would have become a restricted free agent July 1, 2010.  If that was the case I feel the Celtics would have matched any offer regardless.

In 5 years, in 2… and thats all three of them. However, I think Rajon Rondo will continue to be a great point guard because he makes people around him better. He does so many things well, and more importantly, plays defense. His shot may never come around, but he will be a Top 10 point guard in this league for years to come.

Celtics caught a break on this one.

Do either of you agree he may have been overpaid? Granted it looks as if he is going to have another great season after last years breakout but come on… $11 million a year?

I actually think he would have been worth more in the open market, and the Celtics may have had a huge offseason decision on their hands. My example is look at a guy like Sam Cassell. He won 2 rings entering the league and was a huge free agent ever since getting huge contracts.

Yeah, they overpaid a little so they wouldn’t have to overpay a lot next summer. Plus having a young, top 7 point guard will make someone want to sign with them over the summer.

I guess he is number 7 on that list of yours Dan,lol.

I don’t think he is overpaid at all. Players like him don’t come along very often, he was the leader of that team in the postseason, and If you asked if I would have said that before the playoffs, I would have said Ray Allen or Paul Pierce hands down. He got them to Game seven against Orlando. The man is worth the dough, and this system is way to good to pass up.

Regardless of how good I think he is, or how good he really is, he is a young starting point guard for a championship team. If he had waited and let a team bid on him, I guarantee he would have gotten offered more money that the Celtics would have had to try and match.

Rondo is the man of the future for Boston. Smart move by the C’s – they would have had to pay so much more at the end of the season.

Very happy to see Rondo in green for a long time.
