Nets Tie Record Losing Streak, T-Wolves End Theirs; Magic Keep Top Spot in East
LA Lakers 106, New Jersey 87
Hours after firing head coach Lawrence Frank, the New Jersey Nets tied the record for the worst start to a NBA season at 0-17 Sunday night, against the Lakers.
Kobe Bryant’s 30 points led L.A. to a 106-87 win last night at the Staples Center. Kobe actually out scored the entire Nets team in the first quarter 13-12, in a game where the Nets never really had a chance.
Pau Gasol added 20 of his own and the Lakers got solid play from Jordan Farmar off the bench with 15 and a block to end the first quarter.
Brook Lopez did his best to make it a game, scoring a team high 26 but continued his turnover troubles giving up the ball six times.
The Nets will go back home to face Dallas next to possibly set an NBA record of 18 consecutive losses to start a season.
Stat of the Night: Lawrence Frank started his career with the Nets with 13 straight wins. He leaves with 17 straight losses. At least he doesn’t have to deal with this team anymore.
Minnesota 106, Denver 100
The Minnesota Timberwolves snapped their 15-game losing streak against the Denver Nuggets Sunday. The T- Wolves Ryan Gomes put up a team season high of 27 points stopped the losing trend.
Gomes knows full well what it is to be apart of a long losing streak. He, along with Big Al Jefferson were apart of the Celtics 18 game losing streak in 07.
Minnesota got an all around solid performance from their starting lineup. All five were in double figures.
Melo continued his scoring ways dropping 32, but it wasn’t enough to beat the starving Timberwolves.
Orlando 114, New York 102
The Orlando Magic have been on fire lately and they continued that play Sunday in New York defeating the Knicks 114-102.
Rashard Lewis led the Eastern Conference leading Magic with 27 points, with 13 of them coming in the third quarter. Orlando’s three headed monster of Lewis, Carter, and Howard combined for 73 of the team’s points. Howard also pulled down a game high 16 boards.
The Magic have the best record in the East at 14-4. They sweep a short three game road trip knocking off the Hawks and Bucks this weekend.
The Knicks fall to 3-14, with one of those three wins coming against the Nets. The Knicks will get a second chance to knock the Magic off their pedestal, as these two teams meet again on Wednesday.
Stat of the Game: It was Dwight Howard’s 5th straight double-double and has had 16 or more rebounds in his last four.
