LeBron to Lead Petition to Honor Jordan… We’ll See
After the Cavaliers defeated the Heat on Thursday night in Miami, Cavs star LeBron James told TNT that he wants to see the #23 retired by the NBA in honor of Hall of Famer Michael Jordan. Cool, do it. As G mentioned in his wrap-up, Jordan was sitting in the front row with Pat Riley watching this game and LeBron took notice. So LeBron, being the ‘genius’ that he is, told TNT after the game that he’d start the movement away from the #23 by switching to #6 this season. Cool, do it.
“I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon,” James said. “I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I’m starting a petition, and I’ve got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it.” Cool, do it, LeBron.
“Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.” Cool, doooo ittttt.
LeBron is really working off the notion that the NBA logo is already taken (by Jerry West) and that’s not going to change. He wants to be able to recognize Jordan in some way. But why? Is this something that LeBron has been thinking about doing for a while now?
I worry that LeBron really doesn’t care that much and he is doing this simply because he got excited to see MJ at his game. So again, I say to LeBron – cool, do it.
Am I wrong to think though, that James said it feeling the need to say something. So instead of saying, “yeah, I saw him and shook his hand before the game,” James said something that will make him look like a hypocrite if he doesn’t actually make the switch to another number.
By the way, he has #6 lined up due to his admiration for Julius Erving. I guess he’ll push for that number to be retired too when he sees Dr. J sitting on the sideline of a Sixers game in Philly.
All I’m saying is LeBron made a good point and he has the star power to make this happen. It doesn’t have to be an official decision made by the NBA as long as each player states their willingness to stay away from #23. But I hope that LeBron takes what he says seriously, because whether or not they should, people are listening. So when LeBron says he’s going to do something to honor a past great, I say, just do it.

Lebron is technically already being a hypocrite, he picked the Number 23 to pay tribute to Jordan, but now he wants nobody to wear when they retire his number in Chicago. Why? Why the Change King?
Ref I was thinking the same thing man. LeBron pulling a John Kerry. C’mon man! I think he wants to change it so they can retire #6 after he is done.
hahhaa i could totally see that being the reason
I thought LeBron was a big fan of Bill Russell, too, former #6 in Boston. That number is retired there too, BTW.
LeBron’s a talented player, but just like Jordan, he’s an ass with a massive ego. Come on, Bron, who you kidding man? The two cities that have #23 retired are Chicago and Miami. We know he’s just trying to stir the pot after his whole “I’m done talking with 2010.” He just wants to play… Then play. Now we have yet another story about him. I can hear it now… “LeBron to honor Michael by ditching 23 — Will he follow in his Airness’ footsteps in Chicago?” or how about more recently, “DWade Dunks on Varajeo… Puts a Show on for his future teammate LeBron?”
Okay, LeBron, so you’re done talking about 2010, but now you’re talking about changing your number… in 2010. Like J said, just do it. Why wait until 2010? Oh, I know why, because 2010 is the year of LeBron. His contract expires with the NBA AND Nike… How convenient that he’ll change his jersey in that year.
I think he wants to make his mark and go into the HOF with his “own” number … and also, realistically, make his jersey sales rocket. Remember when Kobe changed his number? He went #1 after that and got a ton of money — as if he needed anymore. But I digress.
Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to have LeBron go to the Knicks or hell, even the Nets. However, I think the whole hoopla over 2010 and LeBron is just getting annoying. Win a championship and then we can start comparing you to Jordan. Like I mentioned however, he’s got the ego down. This is coming from a Jordan fan, too.
BTW, I meant to say that LeBron’s contract expires with the Cavs, not the NBA. My bad.
Good article, J.
Vinny, love the passion, but did you by any chance check out our podcast? If not, I think you will enjoy it, thoroughly.
